Big Goes Green

Being environmentally friendly is easy in your head; putting it into practice needs commitment and with that the individual can achieve a certain amount of success by just recycling paper, bottles and cans.

But how can big things like football stadiums be green when they are so, well, big?

Apparently they need about 20,000 litres of water a day to keep the pitch in tip top condition. That amount of water makes a big demand on the system and if you want to be friendly to the environment then a new approach has to be found..

And a great example of ‘new’ thinking is the stadium recently built by Urban Edge Studio for Dartford Football Club in Kent.

The designers have designed a system which collects water from almost every flat surface that the stadium has and then stores it in two purpose built lakes near by.

This means they should never have to take water form the mains and could survive a drought for two months before they’d have to turn on a tap.

It’s an exciting development and you can discover what else they have achieved by visiting:
